In my many years of corporate training and working with management teams, I’ve always subscribed to the importance of leaders being vulnerable with their subordinates. This concept is emphasised in most of the Western teaching material when it comes to leadership—John Maxwell speaks about it, Stephen Covey speaks about it, and Patrick Lencioni even wrote a whole book specifically on the topic, called Getting Naked. Brené Brown’s talk “The Power of Vulnerability” is currently ranked one of the 10 most popular TEDx talks. These Western values of being open and vulnerable with staff are well-established, and they’re concepts that I’ve always..
By Linh Le Principal & Co-Founder at LUXPERIA DMC COLLECTIVE When it comes to recalling the memory of a destination, little does one think about the price paid for the trip. We recall the type of room/s we had, the style of the hotel or resort, and the memorable tastes we enjoyed from that region. As a Destination Management Company, LUXPERIA is responsible for the creation of these memories. We connect the dots of how to get there and where to sleep while tailoring the tour to the tastes of the travellers. Frequently, we work with management..
The magnificent Capella Hanoi brings its enchanting beauty to one of the city’s most desirable locations – Hoan Kiem in Hanoi's nostalgic quarter. Adjacent to the iconic Hanoi Opera House, Capella Hanoi was dreamt up by Bill Bensley, the acclaimed architect behind Capella Ubud, Bali, the No. 1 Hotel in the World in 2020. Capella Hanoi was conceived of as a palace of revelry during opera's halcyon days. Behind the gilded door, the story begins. Guests can imagine opera's greatest artists, singers, composers, set and costume designers flocking to this rendezvous spot after the final curtain call.  Within the 47-rooms..
By Sean T. Ngo CEO and Co-Founder VF Franchise Consulting Franchising is no longer new in Vietnam. All one needs to do is look around. A Starbucks here, a Lotteria over there, and KFC, and Domino’s seem to be everywhere. Local franchises such as Toco Toco, InXpress, Highlands Coffee, Trung Nguyen, and Gong Cha also abound.  In fact, according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, there were nearly 280 foreign brands registered in Vietnam at the beginning of 2022, and likely a handful of others were in the queue. Vietnam’s franchising market is catching up to its neighbors, where..
In 1989, when I first arrived in Vietnam, foreign visitor arrivals were around 200,000 per year and tourism revenues of less than US$ 100 million. The exchange rate was approximately 4700 VND per 1 US$. There were three flights a week to Saigon and two to Hanoi—all from Bangkok—plus one or two flights per week from the former USSR. There were two domestic flights per day between Hanoi and Saigon on old Russian Tupolev aircraft. To get our entry visas, we had to overnight in Bangkok. There were no cars available apart from government cars so all travel was either..
Scientists are still debating whether and to what extent language affects our perceptions. However, it’s not far-fetched to think that the vocabulary we use every day can influence how we see our world.  For example, experiments have shown that Russian speakers are better than their English counterparts when it comes to identifying and distinguishing lighter and darker shades of blue. This is because in the Russian language there is no general “blue”, only the specific terms for the different tones.  Do these experiments imply that we can rewire our brain by changing our terminology? I believe the answer is “Yes”.  ..

News about the pandemic may be waning, but this era of torrential change is far from over. Transformation is now more than just a buzzword; it’s an issue of survival. Colin Blackwell from Hyperion Fintech reports that “it’s about time to embrace it.” By Colin Blackwell We’re living in an era of transformation.  From health crises to supply chain issues to shifting employee mindsets, the world of work is more volatile and unpredictable than ever before. However, one thing has grown significantly clearer over the last few years - companies have to continuously modernise to remain relevant. A few years..
In 2021, global consulting firm Accenture turned to Virtual Reality (VR) to redefine the new joiner onboarding process as a more global, immersive, collaborative, and memorable VR experience. That year alone, more than 45,000 new employees across 29 countries shared a rich, consistent experience focused on human connection. This year that number will be closer to 150,000. SO WHAT IS THE METAVERSE? Whilst unfamiliar to many and still nascent in many respects, the metaverse and its enabling technologies have been around for over three decades, existing mostly as a collection of game-based online environments with little or no interoperability. However,..
Streets International is an incredible organisation, but how did you choose Hoi An as the location? Our vision was a self-supporting social enterprise. The final location needed enough tourism to support and generate our anticipated revenue.   During our search, the tourism market and property development landscape were evolving quickly, and we saw similar business models flourishing in Hanoi. After careful market analysis, we decided to focus more on a centrally based location and haven’t regretted it for a second. Streets began operating pre-pandemic. How did your team handle the lockdown and pivot to remain afloat? Vietnam quickly locked down in..
For someone stuck in the cycle of poverty, getting a loan can be the first step toward creating a brighter future.  But accessing a bank loan is difficult, if not impossible, for someone who doesn’t own a house or anything more than a small sliver of land.  “Around 2000 the Vietnamese government gave almost everyone access to banks, but this didn’t include poor people who had no land or skills,” said Bernard Kervyn, co-founder of the NGO Mekong Plus. “They were considered high-risk by banks, who are reluctant to lend to people who make less than US$1 per day.” In..
Until the beginning of this year, the economic climate in Vietnam was characterised by great optimism. In fact, despite the global COVID-19 crisis, Vietnam had come through the last two years relatively well. A major contributing factor seems to be the opening up of the economy and the country after the harsh lockdowns of last summer. Indeed, Prime Minister Chinh’s opinion expressed in September 2021, “We must live with the disease”, is diametrically different from China’s zero coronavirus strategy. Nevertheless, dark clouds still appear in the sky. New areas of tension are emerging. It is becoming clear that Vietnam’s economy..
